This train service is a must try one for a Central European adventure, all thanks to good onward connections to Vienna, Prague, Budapest, and beyond.

  1. Treno Gottardo

One of Switzerland's primary Alpine entry points to Italy, the Gotthard Railway, blends breathtaking scenery with amazing engineering achievements. Take the Treno Gottardo, which runs directly from Basel or Zurich to Locarno, to take in the landscape. The railroad passes over 3,000 feet through the old Gotthard Tunnel, which was constructed in 1882. It travels through the tunnel for roughly ten minutes, giving passengers ample opportunity to enjoy the scenery on either side. At the southern end of the journey, the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino may entice you to pause and explore before continuing on direct trains to Milan or Venice.

The train descends to Locarno on the palm-tree-lined shores of Lake Maggiore after ascending a sequence of bridges and spiral tunnels to snow-capped hills south of Lake Lucerne. The lake, which spans Switzerland and Italy and has blue waters with steep slopes on either side, is home to lovely palazzos and verdant gardens on its little islands.

  1. West Highland Line

Soon after departing Glasgow, this railway line goes north through shimmering lochs and into harsh highland terrain. Three hours later, trains arrive at the Corrour station, which is situated in a huge moorland that is only reachable by rail or foot

4. Interity Notte to Sicily

Among the longest direct train routes in Europe are those that go from Milan or Rome to Sicily. It can be a pleasant length for night trains, but it might be a bit too far to go during the day.

The Treno del Sole, also known as the Sunshine Train, and the Freccia del Sud, sometimes known as the Southern Arrow, were two trains that formerly traveled this route and contributed to the mass exodus of Italians from the rural south to the industrial north following World War II.

After boarding, passengers can eat meals or go to bed, and when they wake up, they can enjoy views of the coast and southern sunshine. The train cars being loaded aboard Europe's final passenger train ferry—complete with tracks—to cross the Strait of Messina to Sicily around breakfast time is the high point. The trip ends with a picturesque ride along the coast to either Syracuse or Palermo.

5.Train de la Cote Bleue

Getting on and off the train along the coast to take in the sights is the best way to spend this day trip, which departs from the center of Marseille. You may start a walking tour of the locations that served as inspiration for painters like Paul Cézanne and Georges Braque from L'Estaque station. From Niolon, a coastal path leads to Cap Méjean, passing through a series of calanques, rocky limestone coves that resemble tiny fjords. The calanques in the national park south of Marseille are more pristine than those on the Côte Bleue. However, like in Méjean, a little harbor and a massive railway viaduct that rises above the azure seas give the place its own unique character.

This train journey from Marseille to Miramas, which is named after the Mediterranean's azure waves, takes less than two hours. The first portion of the path, which passes close to the fishing village of Martigues and avoids white cliffs, is what makes it so well-liked. Important work was recently done on it to maintain it safely and prevent it from closing.
